Thick boards are generally used for formal and wedding cakes that you are covering the cake board with fondant as the thick sides are wide enough to place choice of colored ribbon around to tie into the color theme of your cake. Thick cake boards are stronger than masonite or thin boards and will also need to be used when doing tiered cakes.
